Green!

Green is the color of the Florida late-summer garden. Solid green. Peanuts, southern peas, sweet potatoes, scallions, lima beans, some "sweet" peppers that long ago turned hot, and some struggling oregano, basil and parsley. Lots of okra rising from the waves of green...

Persimmons are ripening! Looks like I won't get any bananas this year. Banana hands that emerge this late in the season won't beat the frost.

  1. Zone 9 Gardener from Debary, I had a terrible garden this year. I fought the bugs, mainly squash bugs. I thought your garden did so well, do you garden organically? It is nice to see and read about other gardeners in my zone and area.

  2. i dont garden organically here in fla because i dont think our climate is well suited to it. i use manufactured fertilizer (10 10 10 or 20 20 20) and several other soil conditioners that wouldnt qualify as organic. that said, i VERY rarely use anything against hte bugs, preferring organic and mechanical solutions. i also garden in such a way that manages to avoid pests. anyway, summer is tough. i recommend taking it easy with peanuts, chaya, sweet potatoes, fall fruits (grapes, persimmons, pears) okra, hot peppers. those crops are all dead easy... and require almost no inputs save a little weeding and watering when we're not inundated.

  3. but peanuts and sweet potatoes aren't green, they're brown! and bananas are more suited in warmer climates so you'll get them again in spring/summer, nice to hear your garden is doing well btw!
