Beets & Potatoes...

I really love Chioggia beets in the Florida garden... I've grown several kinds, including the standard Detroit. In the end, Chioggia do the best for me. My Slavic nature makes me wary of any beet that doesn't stain your hands red, but Chioggia are so pretty I can forgive them. Anyway, my potato culture is pretty simple: All winter long, anytime a potato looks hinky, I plug it into the row of leaf must and compost along one edge of my garden. I know it's time to scrabble when the potato leaves start to decline... Very productive crop, of course, even here in Florida...

This is unrelated to potatoes or beets, but are you able to grow strawberries year round? I recently came across someone who said strawberries should be treated as annuals in Florida because of the hot summers but I was hoping to get a strawberry bed started in my front yard.

i've always been told that strawberries cannot tolerate our long wet summers, and that even if you nurse the plants through the summer (i'm sure it's possible, since strawberries are very tough little plants), they aren't very productive... our local ag center gets plants in every september and sells them cheap, 50 cents a pop. i don't know whether i'll grow them again: i got them into the earth quite early, in october, but my garden doesn't get enough sun during the winter to make them productive. recently they've produced nicely, a handful of berries every morning from a 10' row. but is that really worth the space and compost? i guess that depends on what else i could have grown there...

I have started potato farming in my village from last 3 years and its a great experience. Now I want to start vegetable seeds gardening near my house. Your blog is really helping me for this. Thank you
