Hi all, the first of the fall tomatoes just started to ripen. The winner of the race for the earliest tomato looks to be the Sweet Quartz cherry and just behind it was the Golden Gem. Had some for lunch on Sunday and they sure were good!My Jet Setter tomatoes are coming along nicely, but still green. Tonight's near-freezing temperatures may do them in... so be it.

Hi. It's been very interesting and informative reading your gardening blog. I have a question for you that Google can't answer, it seems.
I live in the Tampa area and plan to begin a vegetable garden as soon as we're done moving into our new house and the weather permits. Last night I was cutting into a tomato I bought at the grocery store, and it was growing. Roots, leaves, everything. Since we eat tomatoes like they're apples, and want to have a vegetable garden I thought to plant the tomato and let it grow. I noticed it got down to 38 here last night. This is probably a bad time of the year to be planting tomatoes, eh? I should probably just take a picture of it for memories sake and then ditch it?
Thanks for any help. JRM
ditch it! and start with a proven florida variety in february...
